Once the center of the slave trade, Rhode Island is addressing a long-simmering issue from its past.
I invite you to read a story of slavery, dignity, and redemption... Darkling - An American Tale.

In 1798, Adaeze makes the Middle Passage in chains only to be impregnated and sold into bondage in Newport, Rhode Island. Orv, a demon who prefers to be called a thaumaturge, tells her slavery is a blessing.
Captain Tyce buys Adaeze, whom he renames Daisy Tyce, and adopts her daughter, Hope. As Hope Tyce blossoms into a scandalously beautiful, blue-eyed mixed-race woman, she attracts the attention of Lady Perrin, a British noblewoman who plans to use Hope to advance her own ventures in the sugar and opium trades. Orv is dealing with problems of his own, including a rival demon, Zurn. Just as Lady Perrin prepares to exile Adaeze to a plantation in Barbados in 1815, Zurn imprisons Orv... for 156 years.
In 1971, Robin Doyle learns she is descended from Adaeze. Robin is fighting to win her rightful role in the family business. To her amazement, she accidentally releases Orv from captivity, and he offers to assist her in his own way. With the help of some unorthodox historians, Robin sets out to learn all she can about Adaeze. What she learns will show her how to deal with her own future, and help her confront her persistent little helper and send him straight to hell!
DARKLING - AN AMERICAN HYMN looks at slavery from several points of view, including that of the demons who believe that all commerce is to the good. History unfolds and enfolds three Tyce women. Can the future overcome the sins of the past?

Two weeks in a spot just a ways up from Dublin.
“Would you like to do something tomorrow, or do nothing tomorrow?”
She knew him. A book in his hand on a cool June evening, and she didn’t ask, “What are you reading?” or “Is it any good?” The title was on the cover, and the fact that he was still reading it told her it was good.
He smiled. The woman was amused by life, trim, just the right amount of pretty to smile at.
He’d have snapped something coarse if she asked lots of empty, foolish questions. It was a lifetime habit that had earned him predictable consequences again and again. He had scaly bits all over him capable of leaving deep abrasions. She accepted the bad in him, mostly; and, neither did she apologize for her own natural spikes and armor. There are no smooth-skinned humans.
Late, low sun made the pub across the way glow invitingly. Distant sounds of children, indistinct, thankfully. He breathed the dusky laxness into his lungs. A squat brick wall protected this brilliant garden behind their rental cottage. Foxgloves and Bellflower and so many more. Nature works in riot and chaos, like a woman; best to let her bluster.
Had they been together three months? Not quite. She was a lot to think about, but he didn’t think too hard. That was the gift.
“Nothing, if that’s good for you,” he told her, not looking up from his book but not able to keep his eyes from smiling at the sound of her.
“Nothing sounds perfect,” she said. She set down a dewy glass for each of them.
She knew him.

Truly golden
Out of reach
The mind, it warns
The heart, it seeks
Becca Becca
Of whirling dancers there is one
Tall and strong and blinding she comes
All I ever asked for
Nothing that I knew
She’s the sea – I crave her wetness
She's the air - She leaves me breathless
Come to me now
Here is my one forever
Here is my living heaven
I am just a poor boy who sings
Little little poems in the dark
Becca Becca come to me now
Sigh and sing a song with your boy
Becca Becca
In a frantic lifetime there is one
Brave and sure and fragile she stays
All I ever asked for
Nothing that I knew
She's the sea – I crave her wetness
She's the air - She leaves me breathless
Be with me now
Here is my one forever
Here is my living heaven
I am just a poor boy who sings
Little little poems in the dark
Becca Becca come to me now
Sigh and sing our song, feel our joy
